2015 Chevrolet Trax Compact SUV to be Launched in America [Pics & Details]

The compact SUV segment is growing everywhere. Once a believer in only ‘large’ cars, even America is accepting smaller cars. Things have begun to change there and the market is all set to witness the following three compact SUVs/crossovers.

  • Jeep Renegade
  • Chevrolet Trax
  • Honda HRV aka Vezel

Interestingly, speculatively all these three were expected to be India bound as well. However, latest developments have confirmed that Vezel and Trax are NOT coming to India!

Initially General Motors did not have any plans to launch Trax in the American market but at the New York Auto Show they officially announced the Trax for US market to add to their small-car lineup in the country.

The mini-SUV has a strong tall hatchback-ish look and is based on the Gamma II platform.

The Trax is targeted rather at the developing countries like Mexico, China, Brazil and others. But, with the amazing success story of the Buick Encore (which shares the Gamma II platform with the Trax) and the Jeep Renegade also making it to the American streets, Chevrolet has decided to take this measure.

The American Trax will be almost similar to the international model, but will have an added feature, Chevrolet’s new OnStar 4G LTE embedded vehicle data system which can theoretically turn the vehicle into a Wi-Fi hotspot as and when needed. The Chevrolet Beat styled racing-inspired instrumentation cluster still manages to impress and at the same time take our attention.

In terms of safety a rear-view camera system will be available in all models. Also present will be an Electronic Stability Control (ESC) unit which can control body roll, Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) and additionally the car also gets ten airbags. A 7-inch high resolution touch screen infotainment with a USB port, AUX-in and Bluetooth phone integration should be a good deal clincher.

The Americans will get only the 1.4L turbocharged petrol engine, which churns out 140PS at 6000rpm and a peak torque of 200Nm at a mere 1850rpm. Pretty impressive eh? Transmission duties will be handled by a six speed automatic gearbox. Trax will be offered in 3 trims – LS, LT & LTZ.

General Motors plans the mini-Captiva, Trax to hit the American Showrooms by early 2015 which is when they will reveal its prices. Back here in India, Chevrolet showcased the Adra compact SUV at the Auto Expo which got all of us excited, however, in a recent interview, Chevrolet’s new MD Arvind Saxena shocked everyone by revealing that they have no plans to launch Adra till 2017! 1. Damn… you chevy… I waited for Trax in india for almost 2 years… finally I purchased Honda City. Chevy with your current cinese lineup in India, you are never going to succeed. The Trax was the product that could have turned the tables for you in India. It has good interiors, good ground clearance and compacity to challange Ford Ecosport!
