Ameo; Volkswagen’s Upcoming Compact Sedan Teased!

Volkswagen Ameo Teased Ahead of February Unveil. Will be Present at the Auto Expo with the Tiguan and Passat GTE

Building up the tempo for its official unveil next month, Volkswagen has revealed the name of its upcoming compact sedan. Called as the Ameo, the car will be fighting some well established competition such as the Dzire, Amaze and Xcent. Expected to be a game changer for the German car maker, the Ameo is possibly their most important product launches for this year.

Set to be manufactured in their Chakan facility and the car is expected to hit the roads sometime in the first half of 2016. There has been no confirmation on the platform and powertrain but we expect the Ameo to be based on the Polo hatchback (PQ24). Earlier spyshots have revealed that the external design will be typical Volkswagen with strong resemblance to the Polo and Vento.

Engine options too can be expected to be the 1.2 litre naturally aspirated three pot petrol and 1.5 litre TDI four cylinder diesel mill. A higher variant might also get the 1.2 litre TSI mill from the Polo GT but that for now seems to be just a speculation. Transmission options will also be the same 5 speed manual unit with the four pot TSI getting the controversial 7 speed DSG unit.

As per Volkswagen, the term Ameo has been derived from the Latin word ‘Amo’, which means ‘to love’. Well the company certainly hopes that the first Volkswagen product Made for India is a success but a lot will depend on its pricing. While the German brand is perceived in India to be a slightly more premium offering, the Ameo, considering the tall ladder it has to climb will have to be priced competitively.
