Auto Expo: Mahindra Showcases Rexton With 2.0L Diesel Engine; Indian Launch Possible

Mahindra Ssangyong’s Rexton is the premium-most SUV in the portfolio. It has been received reasonably well in the cities it is sold in. The current Rexton comes with a 2.7L 5 cylinder DOHC diesel engine which produces 162bhp of power and 340Nm of torque.

At the Auto Expo, Mahindra Ssangyong showcased the Rexton with a new 2.0L diesel engine. The new powerplant for the Rexton has 4 cylinders in-line and displaces exactly 1998 cc. The e-XDi Active provides a maximum output of about 152 bhp and a maximum torque of 360 Nm. The new engine is being advertised as being more environmentally responsible, economical, and with better NVH levels.

Rexton is known for its big dimensions and the ability to comfortably transport 8 passengers, including driver, with a unique 8-seater configuration. The car also boasts of a 5-speed automatic transmission by Mercedes Benz as well as dual airbags, ABS, sub-frames front and rear, reversing sensors and electronic 4WD system and ESP in higher-end models.

This engine is already on sale in international markets. Though Mahindra did not specifically confirm (or deny) that, we believe that the company will bring the new 2.0L Rexton into India as well. Considering that it is almost as powerful, produces more torque, is more fuel efficient and must have better driveability, it may just be a complete replacement to the 2.7L motor that does duty now.

Under the Ssangyong umbrella, Mahindra also showcased their LIV-1 Concept SUV as well as the India bound 11-seater Rodius MPV.
