End of an Era :Maruti To Stop Production of Maruti 800 This Month: New Product in Pipeline

Possibly the most iconic car ever produced in the Indian automobile history, the car which everyone wanted to own a few years back, the car which started it all, the car which was a status symbol back then, the Maruti 800 is going to get axed from the production lineup and as soon as this month-end.

Launched in 1983, Maruti 800 was the market leader in terms of sales for maximum number of years till its own sibling, Alto, took over. Till date 800 has sold more than 2.7 million units since its launch. With newer emission norms, Maruti had to stop selling the 800 in top 11 cities of India limiting sales to an average of 2000 units per month.

This announcement came up during the unveiling of Maruti’s latest LUV (Life Utility Vehicle), Ertiga. “We are stopping production of this model from this April-end”, I V Rao, Managing Executive Office engineering Maruti Suzuki said.

However, Maruti has a jack up its sleeve for sure. Company is planning to launch an upgraded car in its place and possibly on similar lines. How big a hit would that be, remains to be seen. For now, we bid adieu to one car which has won the maximum number of hearts,

Good Bye 800!
