Hot Hatch! 135HP Turbocharged Punto T-Jet Snapped; Launch Speculated Around Diwali

Dying to have a hot hatch in India which is powerful enough to set your pulses racing? Here is something for you…

At the launch of Avventura last October, we asked Fiat’s top officials about the missing top variants in petrol and they told us that they are considering the T-jet motor to fill this vacuum (Report here). And here are the first live pics of a Punto test mule which carries the T-jet petrol motor.

Fiat India is planning to launch the Punto Evo with a more powerful turbocharged T-Jet engine which is rumored to have a power output of a whooping 135 bhp. Interestingly the T-Jet Punto is expected to be badged as an Abarth, which is Fiat’s performance division.

The 1.4 litre turbocharged T-Jet engine, on the mid-size sedan Linea produces 112.4 bhp of power at 5,000 rpm and 207 Nm of torque at 2,200 rpm. The same engine on Abarth Punto is expected to churn out higher power because of a new turbocharger.

As per a Facebook Group Team Fiat Moto Club, the Abarth Punto will get disc brakes on all wheels and will be shod with 16 inch alloys. While the car is reportedly expected to hit the market in Diwali, the news already has us on the edge of our seats. Fiat is most likely going to keep things real sporty with a manual gearbox, although its main competitor Volkswagen Polo GT TSI has a 1.2 litre turbocharged petrol with a 7 speed DSG.

The current top trim Punto Evo Sport carries a price tag of Rs 7,51,957 (ex-showroom, Delhi). Expect the T-jet to be significantly pricier than this. And yes, Avventura is also getting a similar treatment for sure…
