Hyundai Recalls 220,000 Santa FE & Sonata to Fix Airbag Issues

Hyundai announced to recall its old Santa Fe crossover and the new Sonata sedan due to faulty airbags. The two recalls are for different problems in the airbags.

A total of around 199,118 2007-09 Santa Fe cars manufactured from April 19, 2006 till July 7, 2008 will get recalled owing to faulty occupant classification system(OCS). This issue was reported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), on which the company commented that the airbags did not function for some occupants weighing less than 59 kilos, hence the OCS will require software recalibration.

On the other hand due to some issue with the side air bags the company is recalling 22,512 Sonata sedans from the 2012-2013 model years, produced from January 24, 2012, through June 21, 2012. The air bags could go off when not required.

The recall is expected to start during August 2012 and Hyundai will replace the side air bags for free.
