EcoSport Beware! Hyundai’s Compact-SUV ‘GC’ Hitting The Town By 2015

What we already know is that Hyundai is preparing a compact SUV for the Indian market. Now, we have some India specific updates and new details that are coming from Autocar India.

The Compact SUV segment has been witnessing burgeoning growth in India. It seems people aren’t just satisfied with a hatchback, or more still, a sedan. Compact SUVs or Crossovers as they are popularly called, are the perfect blend with their brawnier looks, substantial off-roading capability yet easy driving dynamics. Renault was the early bird in this segment, and their Duster got them off to a flyer.

However, Ford EcoSport caught up soon and we now see a fall in Duster’s sales. Nevertheless, the activity in this segment has got many automakers waking up with a start. Nissan Terrano is a badge-engineered product, counterpart of the Renault Duster. We already know that Mahindra is preparing their second offering S101, Maruti the XA-Alpha and Volkswagen the Taigun for India.

To add to the tally, Korean manufacturer, Hyundai is also planning to hijack this segment and its version of a crossover is expected to hit our shores by 2015. The under-development compact SUV has also been spied a few times in South Korea.

Autocar reports that the Crossover will squat on a custom-made platform, which has been codenamed GC. To boost its chances of success, Hyundai will pay attention to the specific details of the Indian market conditions and demographics. Surprisingly, the product could carry an Indian name as well!! Overkill, Hyundai??

This compact SUV will definitely carry Hyundai’s hexagonal grille. Autocar suggests the styling could be subdued rather than flashy, thus allowing the size to make a strong statement rather than the detailing level as in the Ford EcoSport. It may, thus, not have a length of under four meters.

Hyundai could be looking at both the options of a five-seater as well as a seven-seater, with the fiver being a more practical option. Under the hood, we might get to see the 1.6 liter powerplants of the Hyundai Verna.
