i20 Active Doing 2500 Units Per Month; EcoSport-Rival ‘Under Works’

With the launch of Creta, Hyundai finally has a competitor against the Renault Duster and its price also encompasses Scorpio, Safari Storme, the full-sized SUVs but it is way off from the sub 4 meter compact SUV segment which currently has the EcoSport as the major player but is soon to see truckloads of launches in the next few years.

You may argue that they have the i20 Active against the EcoSport, however, it (i20 Active) is nothing more than a puffed up version of the hatchback i20 with slightly bigger wheels and a raised ground clearance. Despite this, Hyundai informed us that they are selling about 2500 units of i20 Active every month which is a pretty impressive figure. This is clearly due to the fantastic looks and initial response for the elite i20.

To take the fight head-on, Hyundai has more aggressive plans and during the launch of Creta, Mr BS Seo, Managing Director and CEO of Hyundai Motor India Ltd confirmed that development of a new sub 4 meter compact SUV is already under way. This is apart from their upcoming MPV which was spotted testing recently.

The new Hyundai SUV may be built on the i20’s platform and we expect it to be a higher, more rugged looking car which will fight out against EcoSport, upcoming Maruti’s YBA and others.

Since it has been confirmed to be a sub 4 meter car, the engines will definitely be the 1.2 liter petrol motor and the 1.4 liter diesel, both from the i20. Since, Creta doesn’t come with it, we do NOT expect the smaller SUV to get an all-wheel drive system either.

They did not reveal anything on its launch timeframe but considering that Hyundai is super-quick with launches, we expect the sub 4 meter SUV to make way sometime next year.
