Mahindra Considering Ssangyong Tivoli for India But the Question is – Where to Place it?

Time and again media has raised this question of – “Is Ssangyong a good buy for Mahindra considering that both are predominantly SUV manufacturers?” This gets highlighted whenever we hear Mahindra is mulling on bringing some Ssangyong SUV to India because there is always a Mahindra which it can hurt, eventually!

After Korando and a few others, Autocar reports that Mahindra is considering Tivoli for our market. Tivoli is an all new Duster-rivaling compact SUV from Ssangyong which will go on sale in Korea sometime next month. It is a feature-rich product and is offered with features like all 4 disc brakes, optional 4 wheel drive, Automatic transmission, seven airbags, ABS etc.

In international markets it gets a 1.6 Liter 125PS petrol engine and 1.6 liter 115 PS diesel motor, however, the Indian Tivoli may get the new 1.5 liter diesel engine that Mahindra is developing for its smaller SUVs like U301 according to the report.

Ssangyong-Tivoli-Compact-SUV (1)Tivoli is a 4.2 meter SUV and should ideally be a Duster/Terrano/ix25 rival at an aggressive price tag, but Mahindra doesn’t have many choices here since they have their Scorpio and XUV500 around this price band. So there is a possibility that Tivoli may end up hitting either of these two Mahindra SUVs more than the others!

One thing that Mahindra may be considering is to offer Tivoli as a more premium compact SUV option loaded with features but we still have our reservations if it can succeed as well. An Achilles Heel this!
