Ratan Tata’s dream Nano is being given a mid-life makeover. First was the Nano Twist, which came out with an electric power steering. Next in line is the Nano Twist Active with a larger fuel tank and an openable rear tailgate, in addition to the power steering.
Then we have the Nano Twist F-Tronic which will have an Automated Manual Transmission (AMT), clearly shifting the branding of the car to that of a easy to drive ‘smart’ city car from the existing ‘cheap car’ image, which has hampered its sales figures badly.
New spy shots shared by Rushlane reveal a Nano mule with minimal camouflage and more importantly that keyhole at the tailgate confirming that the mule is at least the Nano Twist Active (going by the Auto Expo naming convention from Tata). It might even be the Nano Twist F-Tronic but we cannot be sure of that as we do not have any interior images.
The car also sports the new design philosophy for Nano showcased during the Auto Expo, the smiling grille in the front and the rear (though only the rear end is visible in the images).
The larger fuel tank will be a great addition as it will increase the range of the car, and the AMT will help in increasing the driveability of the car. The openable tailgate will also be a boon to make the rear storage space more accessible, so the trips to the mall become more convenient.
Another interesting pointer which we can note is that the car sports smoked rear lamps, that being the first for the Nano series, giving it a rather sinister look. We would have loved it had Tata made the layout of the lamps a bit more sporty. The rear tailgate also has a slight bend to end the monotonousness of the huge rear door. The mule is also running around with a newly-designed rear glass.
The Tata Nano Twist Active and the Nano F-Tronic (or will there be just one model having all of the above mentioned features), will most probably be launched in October to benefit from the festive rush (more details).
