Fiat has hung up a teaser image of its upcoming compact crossover. You will remember us carrying stories about the Fiat soft-roader, which was based on the hatchback Punto. The company says that it plans to launch this “urban warrior” during the Auto Expo which is starting tomorrow.
The Punto is a well put together machine. The panel gaps are minimum and consistent and the overall finish gives this rather big hatch a premium feel. To cut the development costs and time, Fiat has chosen Punto to spruce up and turn it into an urban crossover; a breed that manufacturers feel will be well accepted here.
The spy shots of this new urban SUV from Fiat showed the Punto with its spare wheel prominently bolted up on a swingarm resting securely on the rear bumper. The black plastic cladding on the rear of the car goes almost as high as half of the rear profile and gives the vehicle a ‘skirt-up, tip-toe’ look. Going by the teaser image, it seems like the Punto ‘Adventure’ (as the car might be called) will carry a higher ground clearance. The addition of the spare wheel on the rear will also add millimeters to the overall length. The Punto hatch falls just 13 mm inside of the 4-meter mark at 3987 mm.
The Punto ‘Adventure’ is also expected to get new alloys and all-terrain tires and optional roof racks and a few tidbits that befits the ‘expedition’ looks Fiat wants to render to its urban SUV.
Punto Adventure will get Punto’s 1.3L Multijet diesel engine in the 90PS guise whereas the petrol engine duties will be carried by the 1.4L Naturally Aspirated motor from the Punto/Linea as officially confirmed by Fiat. This means the petrol Punto Adventure will not come under the purview of the ‘Small Car’ definition in India.
