Toyota may launch a Compact SUV on Next-Gen Etios platform; Coming next year

Toyota will soon update the Etios sedan with a new design language. Apart from making it look better, Toyota is planning to develop a Compact SUV on the same platform according to a report on Autocar India.

New-Toyota-Etios

Hisayuki Inoue, CEO of Toyota’s Asia-Pacific theatre of operations, has admitted candidly that the current Etios sedan does look a bit insipid when it comes to styling which is one of the reasons it never really set the sales charts on fire. This is, for the first time, Toyota has admitted that there was something wrong with the styling of the car.

Etios, though a potent and spacious offering comes with a design which doesn’t appeal to the younger crowd much and hence, despite being a car in the fast-moving segment, it has never been able to snatch any significant share from the market.

This confirms two things: One, that the Next-Gen Etios will have a different style statement. It will possess a completely new skin and will be significantly different as compared to the current-gen Etios. This new offering from Toyota is expected to be launched sometime by mid-2015. Good thing this!

Apart from the new sedan (and hatch), Toyota is also looking to milk the platform of the Next-Gen Etios as much as possible. A Compact SUV based on the Etios sedan platform is also reportedly under works, however it is still awaiting final nod for production.

Etios platform already has the upcoming Etios Cross (pictured above), which is, unfortunately coming to us in May this year. By good & more modern looks on the next-gen Etios or the compact SUV, we hope, Toyota doesn’t mean the Etios Cross! Fingers crossed!
