Verito to Get New 110PS Engine; Mahindra Developing 6 New Engines

Mahindra has big plans to take on not only against the local players but also international biggies. They have a plethora of upcoming new products to grab the competition by its throat.

Powering the news cars from Mahindra will be an all new engine family that will be fuel efficient and powerful at the same time. Mahindra is reportedly putting in Rs.4,300 crore towards this engine development. The engines that would power the upcoming cars from Mahindra will be in the range of 1.2-1.6 litres.

There are currently 6 engines in the pipeline out of which 3 of them will be petrol units while the other 3 will be oil burners. The 1.2 litre engines will have three cylinders while the higher capacity engines will be 4 cylinder units. The engines will share most of the parts with each other and are expected to feature a common ‘bore center spacing‘. These engines will be mated to 5 and 6 speed transmissions that are also being worked upon.

The engines will be Euro VI compliant and will be the hearts of the compact crossovers from Mahindra as well as Ssangyong. The development will take place at the company’s research facility, the Mahindra Research Valley (MRV) which is located in Chennai. The word on the street is that they have also roped in the Austrian engine specialists AVL for the job.

All Mahindra’s products will gradually start getting the new engines. This will also enable Mahindra to power the Verito with the new 1.5 litre diesel engine which will reportedly churn out 110 bhp. If this goes true, we might just be a witness to some fantastic performance-offering regular sedan. This will help Mahindra get rid of the reliance on Renault’s K9K motor which does duty on the current Verito. This new motor is also expected to power the Quanto then.

The engines will hit Mahindra cars around early 2015 while the higher end cars like the XUV5OO and Scorpio will be powered by mHawk engines. Mahindra is looking to take the competition to the big guns like Suzuki and Hyundai in India and the newer engines will power that zeal to compete.
