Volvo Launches XC90 T8 Hybrid Excellence for Rs 1.25 cr; India’s 1st Plug-in hybrid SUV

Volvo India has today launched the XC90 T8 Excellence, the country’s first plug-in hybrid. Priced at Rs 1.25 crores (ex-showroom, Delhi), the premium SUV focuses on safety, comfort and style. In fact, I wouldn’t be far off if I say that this is the world’s safest car!

Built on Volvo’s Scalable Product Architecture, it is powered by a petrol and an electric motor (which gives out 87 hp). The 2.0 litre four pot mill churns out 320 hp of power. The combined maximum power stands at 407 hp and a massive 640 Nm of torque. Thanks to this, the SUV can sprint form 0 to 100 kmph in just 5.6 second.

The Volvo XC90 T8 hybrid gets three driving modes:

Pure:The high-voltage battery is fully charged, it serves as the car’s sole power source, powering the electric motor over the rear axle. The XC90 T8 has an all-electric range of 40 km, which is usually sufficient for most daily commutes. It also has regenerative braking system. this mode is super-efficient in the stop-and-go traffic of city environments. If more power is needed, the petrol combustion engine starts up automatically.

Hybrid: The default mode, suitable for everyday use. Here, the vehicle will automatically alternate between drawing power from the petrol engine and the electric motor to deliver the best overall fuel consumption and an unmatched segment best CO2 of 49g/km.

Power: Here, drivers get the combined performance of the combustion engine and the electric motor. The SUV takes advantage of the electric motor’s superior response and instant torque curve, while the combustion engine gets up to speed. This combination offers better torque at lower revs, equivalent to that of a large displacement engine like the V8.

The exterior looks the same as the same the standard variant save new alloy wheels, chrome plated pillars and lower door moulding. The captain seats in the rear are electronically adjustable and and offer incredible support. Also present is a retractable tablet, table and a beverage cooler. Hey, the Swedish glass specialists, Orrefors, have also provided the SUV with crystal glasses and a stylish gear knob.

Entertainment is covered by a 19+1 set of speakers by Bowers and Wilkins. Interiors are studded with Nappa leather and open pore wood. This Volvo is also the first car in the country to have radar based safety system. This includes adaptive cruise control, blind spot detection, lane departure warning and collision warning!
