April 2014 Sales Honda: City Continues Dominance; Brio Disappoints Big Time

Honda seems to have decided that they shall not rest till they have a good control over the Indian car market. In these turbulent days when big wigs like Maruti & others are seeing a drop in sales volume, Honda is consistently setting good scores!

According to the official release, Honda managed to shipped 11,040 cars in April 2014 as compared to 8,488 units in the corresponding month last year. This means a year on year growth rate of 30 percent thanks to Honda City which individually was the largest seller for them at 7,044 units.

The other car with the same 1.5L diesel engine, Honda Amaze also contributed with 3355 units. But Brio, on the other hand, just seems to be going down every month. This makes us wonder if Honda is specifically suppressing its production and giving it to the more popular cars in its arsenal.

But going by the word Honda has officially shared that, with the new facility in Tapukara Rajasthan, their total monthly production capacity is now 20,000 units per month and hence, Brio should fit in properly. This is under the assumption that the other facility is completely operational and could churn out the designated 10K units. So, is Brio really getting out of the list of majority of car buyers?

This is a real concern if this is true. 578 units for a B-segment hatchback are, frankly, nothing really to talk about. And with Honda’s clarification that Brio will NOT get a diesel, things do not look very bright as well. Honda may just have to consider a minor facelift for Brio to freshen up things then!

Nonetheless, moving back to the April sales, Honda also exported 402 units with their CR-V registering another 63 unit sales. Honda is very optimistic that the response which they have got for the new City will continue to keep pushing their volumes. They also celebrated the first anniversary of the Amaze with the launch of a special anniversary edition but at an exorbitant 70k premium.

The upcoming MPV Mobilio and the premium hatch Jazz, both with diesels, will just add to the tally and we do see Honda threatening the top 3 manufacturers for their slots!

Here is a detailed Car-wise sales list for April 2014:

  • Brio:  578 units
  • Amaze:  3355 units
  • City:  7044 units
  • CR-V: 63 units
