BMW India, in its bid to increase its foothold in India took a major step towards the goal of Make in India when they announced upto 50 per cent localisation levels for models made at their Chennai plant. The fruit of this is being reaped now with a price cut.
In an official communication BMW has informed us of their updated price list which shows a fall in prices. Their Chennai plant started operations back on March 29, 2007 and since then the manufacturer has been busy increasing the number of their locally produced models.
As of now the Chennai plant has two assembly lines producing eight models which include the BMW 1 Series, the BMW 3 Series, the BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo, the BMW 5 Series, the BMW 7 Series, the BMW X1, the BMW X3 and the BMW X5.
They have even tied up with some major component suppliers in India to assist in their plans. These include Force Motors (for engine and transmission), ZF Hero Chassis (for axles), Draexlmaier India (for door panels and wiring harness), Tenneco Automotive India (for exhaust systems), Valeo India with Mahle Behr (for ventilation, air-conditioner and cooling modules) and Lear India (for seats).
