Production rediGo looks very close to the concept and if priced well can send shivers to specially the Eon…
Datsun today unveiled their third car for India, the production version of rediGo. Based on the CMF-A platform (same as that of the Kwid), rediGo aims to mix the drivability of a hatchback with the ruggedness of a crossover. Yes, Datsun calls it ‘the Urban Cross’! The car looks to have decent features considering the segment it is targeting . Bookings will begin next month in May and deliveries will commence from June.
Powering the rediGo is a three pot, fuel efficient 0.8 litre mill, the same unit powering Kwid. While specifications have not been revealed, we expect the figures to be very close to the Renault sibling. On Kwid, this engine produces 54 PS of power, 72 Nm of torque and returns a fuel efficiency of 25.17 kmpl. The transmission system comprises of a 5 speed manual unit.
Retaining the design style of the concept model showcased back in 2014, rediGo continues with the growing cross hatch style cars that we have seen of late. The Japanese call this bold design philosophy as ‘Yukan’.
The exterior gets a familiar hexagonal grille, sleek head lamps , LED daytime running lights and vertical tail lamps. Speaking of interiors, Datsun claims best in class knee room and best in class visibility. The air con vents are circular while the entertainment consists of a simple one DIN unit. In terms of safety it gets driver side airbags. ABS will most probably be skipped. The tall boy design pattern allows for generous amounts of headroom. The ground clearance is a high 185 mm. Here’s what Mr Guillaume Sicard, President, Nissan India Operations said about the car:
“The Datsun redi-GO, as a tangible expression of this commitment, offers several best-in-class capabilities. It is created to bring fun, free and confident thinking to the otherwise traditional compact hatchback segment.”
While prices have not been revealed, Datsun confirms they will be competitive. That is highly likely considering the cost cutting involved. The car gets a single windscreen wiper and thin door pads. At an expected price tag of under 2.5 Lakhs for the base variant, rediGO appears to be a very potent A-segmenter which will rival Eon and the Marutis.
