As a part of its strengthening plans in India, Ford is all set to introduce a new small car in India by 2015, so says a report by Economic Times. This development comes as a part of the earlier announcement by Ford to usher in eight new models by 2015.
As of now, the plan for the introduction of eight new models is well on track. Four of them have been launched so far, and the company believes it has a strong enough footing to launch four more cars by the scheduled time.
Details about the new small car are currently sketchy at best. We are a little confused when Ford says ‘small’. Do they mean a product under their Figo ie an A-segment hatchback or they are talking about the new Ka, which we know is definitely coming to us and will replace Figo in India.
It has been said that the new small car will be positioned in the mass-market segment, and will hence carry a very interesting price tag. Both these conditions are justified by Figo/Ka. And considering that Ford’s production capacity doesn’t allow them to bring in another mass seller, we believe it IS the next-Gen Figo (Ka) that the Economic Times article is talking about.
Ford believes that the new small car will help skyrocket itself to a new apogee, as the mass-market segment commands high volumes in the Indian market. Ford’s currently has Figo and EcoSport which have garnered enthusiastic responses, and if the new car does follow suit then it will be a true lofted shot for the manufacturer.
Next-Gen Ka, codenamed as ‘B562’ will come with EcoSport’s 1.0L Ecoboost petrol engine along with either the 1.5L or the 1.4L diesel engine. Interestingly, it will be unveiled as early as the upcoming Auto Expo in February.
Some other measures that Ford India is undertaking:
- Increase in production capacity of EcoSport to tackle issue of long waiting periods
- Introduce models in all segments of passenger vehicles
Ford is having a ball of a time with the EcoSport currently and have some interesting products lined up for India. How will they perform, remains to be seen.
