RECALL ALERT: Honda Recalls Accord & CR-V in India for Airbag Issue

In an official confirmation from Honda India, the company has announced that they are recalling the Honda Accord and Honda CR-V sold in 2003 to replace the passenger side inflator which has a potential defect.

This recall is a part of the global voluntary recall of over two million vehicles manufactured between August 2000 and December 2005.

The recall in India comprises of:

  • 1,085 units of the Accord manufactured in 2003
  • 252 units of the CR-V manufactured in 2003
  • 1 unit of the CR-V manufactured in 2002

There has been no reporting of any untoward incidences due to this fault but Honda India is not taking any risk and recalling the vehicles for a thorough check. The faulty airbags unit has been supplied by Japan’s Takata Corporation, which is also the supplier for names like BMW, Toyota and Nissan. Due to a problem during the propellant forming process, the casing of the inflator may get damaged when the airbag gets deployed in case of an accident or other situation, causing a potential risk of an injury to the occupant.

The replacement would be done free of cost at Honda Cars India Ltd (HCIL) dealerships across the country in a phased manner. The company will communicate with contactable customers directly. The customers can also check whether their car will be covered under this campaign by submitting their 17 character alpha-numeric Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), alias the chassis number on a special microsite which has been created on the company’s website here.
