Honda vs Mahindra: Fight for the Third Largest Manufacturer Title

After Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai, Mahindra is the third largest car manufacturer in the country. Ever since Honda launched their diesel engine in India, it has looked all the more aggressive and their sales tally show people’s acceptance.

Things began to heat up when Honda launched the Amaze with the new 1.5L diesel engine in India last year. Honda’s brand name and the astronomical fuel efficiency figures ticked the boxes and Amaze became an instant hit. The latest City with the same diesel motor is a rage these days.

According to Economic Times, last month, Honda sold 16,316 units while the Indian conglomerate sold just 16,780 units. That’s a difference of less than 500 units. This difference can be easily be covered with the upcoming Mobilio, which is set to be launched within this month.

Honda has high hopes from the 7 seater MPV, with which it is directly targeting the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga. And they do have the Jazz left! While this is comfortably expected to cement Honda’s position in the top three, Mahindra also has a few cards left. The compact SUV S101 and the updates to the existing line-up will definitely give a solid boost to its sales. The fight is not over yet and is just beginning to heat up.

The main problem that Mahindra might face is that Honda has the Mobilio coming in just a few days and the premium hatchback Jazz in a few months, while Mahindra’s arsenal will only be ready by next year. Especially the S101, which is not expected to be released before mid-2015.

Only time will tell what’s going to happen between these two giants, but one thing is sure, somebody is going to get hurt.
