Is Mahindra Preparing a Scorpio Petrol for India? We Spotted One!

In an interesting bit of scoop, we have landed upon something which seems a little surprising to us. Mahindra Scorpio has a huge fan base and people love it in its 2.2L diesel version.

We spotted this Mahindra Scorpio standing after a tank up at a fuel station in Pune. This is the same Petrol bunk where we have spotted a few test mules earlier as well. Just for our reader’s information Mahindra had launched a petrol variant of Scorpio which was powered by a 2.0L 116hp MPFI 4 cylinder engine at a very attractive price many years back.

However, the petrol Scorpio could not succeed since it was lethargic and returned dismal mileage. Shortly after its launch, Mahindra discontinued it. We also know that Mahindra has recently launched a petrol Scorpio in South Africa. The South African petrol Scorpio is powered by an mHawk 2.2L 140hp/ 280Nm (Impressive!) MPFI Turbo petrol engine.

The mule which we caught was a four wheel drive Automatic version and we were informed by the driver that they have just finished up fueling petrol and ready for a test run again. Now, this could mean one of the two things:

  • Mahindra is testing a petrol scorpio for India and might only launch it in higher 4×4 Automatic variants
  • Mahindra is testing a 4×4 AT version for South Africa and possibly other markets

A petrol Scorpio with the same engine as mentioned above at Rs 7 Lakh would definitely make sense, wouldn’t it? Whatever it might be, we would soon come to know about it, rest assured!
