Mahindra Scorpio Special Edition Launched – Are you 1 in 500?

Feeling the heat in the SUV segment, Mahindra has released a Special edition of its best seller Scorpio to boost sales this festive season. The decade old first indigenously developed SUV by Mahindra lost the segment leadership to recently launched Compact SUVs Ford Ecosport and Renault Duster. Scorpio did manage to become the second largest seller beating Duster last month, though!

This high may be short lived with the release of Nissan Terrano scheduled for the festive season. To maintain and push sales ahead Mahindra has opted for the special edition route and come up with a Special Edition 2013 Mahindra Scorpio.

Only 500 of these special editions will be produced to provide a sense of exclusivity to the owners. The special edition will be available in pearl white and will come with cosmetic enhancements (only). The Scorpio Special Edition comes with the following features:

  • European leather interiors in tan and beige
  • Leather wrapping on steering wheel (even the gear knob and gear shift get it)
  • Alloy wheels with chrome finish
  • Roof mounted DVD player with 9-inch screen
  • Gloss wood finished central bezel
  • Dual front airbags.

These cosmetic upgrades sure do provide a premium feel to the vehicle but these add-ons are easily available aftermarket and with a choice! The special edition Scorpio will only be available in the VLX trim and is powered by the same 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine with 120PS of power and 290 Nm of torque.

There is no word on the pricing yet, but it may cost somewhere close to Rs 25,000-30,000 more than the regular Scorpio VLX.
Mahindra has said that an all new Scorpio will be launched in a couple of years. We also have a few recent spottings of what appears to be merely a facelifted Scorpio (rather than an all-new model).

From the spyshots we see that the facelift will get revamped headlamps, grille, bumper, fog lamps, bonnet and the rear styling may also get a wee bit of tweaking.

It would be interesting to see whether these cosmetic enhancements on the Scorpio Special Edition will be enough to give any push to the sales of Scorpio during the festive season until the new facelifted version hits the market sometime next year.
