Indians love SUVs and there’s no doubt about it! Almost every manufacturer is trying to get into it. The sheer launch of as many as 5 SUVs this month is a testimony to the interest it has garnered.
The segment became richer when Renault came up with Duster and it became a huge hit instantly! Now we’re awaiting Ford EcoSport to be launched pretty soon to add some spice. Mahindra is working on an All New Scorpio which is due for launch in 2014. And the list goes on and on…
It is ironical that country’s largest manufacturer Maruti is NOT present in this burgeoning SUV segment. Gypsy is made to order and Grand Vitara is, well as good as non-existent! Now, Economic Times reports that Maruti Suzuki will come up with as many is 4 SUVs within next 2 years! Now that’s some news!
Here is what could be on offer
- A Crossover version of the SX4 will hit the showrooms sometime in 2014
- Next will be the production version of the XA Alpha. We saw the concept at the 2012 Auto Expo.
- A sub-4-meter Vitara is also on the cards to take on the likes of the EcoSport.
- And a SUV version of the DZire would also make it to the roads by 2015
If this list is to be believed, Maruti seems all set to extract juice out of this segment by introducing many products in one segment like they have been doing for the A and B segments in India. We have seen the XA-Alpha in concept form at the Auto Expo and hence we believe it is coming for sure. For the rest, a concrete confirmation is what we will wait for.
