Maruti Preparing ‘YJC’ Compact MPV Under Ertiga: 7-Seat WagonR MPV?

So, there you go! The first sneaking bits of the 7-seat WagonR coming to India are here. In a report published at Economic Times, it has been reported that Maruti Suzuki has floated proposals to its vendors and suppliers for a compact MPV under Ertiga.

Codenamed internally as YJC, this is touted to create a new sub-segment in the country and will be based on the WagonR. This directly takes us to Indonesia where Suzuki had showcased a 7-Seater WagonR and has plans to launch it soon (there). An MPV based on WagonR can just be nothing else but yes it may have an Indian-specific design alteration and changes.

Maruti will like to carry forward the practicality of WagonR along with the addition of a couple of more seats at the rear. The company is expecting volumes of around 80,000 units per year and the proposed start of production is expected sometime in September 2016.

Being based on the WagonR, Maruti has a good chance of restricting the compact MPV at under 4 meters mark which will allow them the lowest excise duties. And if this goes true, they may plonk the 1.2L K-series petrol engine on the car. However, we can not predict anything about the diesel engine at this point.

Current WagonR spans across till Rs 4.35 Lakhs and Ertiga starts at around Rs 5.8 Lakhs. This means Maruti may be eyeing this price bracket of something starting from around Rs 4 Lakhs spanning across till Rs 6 odd Lakhs.

Datsun is all set to launch their Go+ MPV in India which is a stretched version of Go hatchback. It is expected to start at about Rs 4 lakhs as well.
