Maruti May Launch Alto 800 Diesel in December!

After Honda took charge of its Indian operations seriously and started churning out cars with some astounding fuel efficiency figures, it was time Maruti Suzuki, the country’s largest car maker take notice. Notice, they did and ever since last year they have been launching cars with some astounding best-in-class rated fuel efficiencies.

They also produced the all-new two cylinder diesel engine, a first for the brand and plonked it on the Celerio, only to make it the country’s most fuel efficient car at 27.62 kmpl. And in a bid to outdo itself, it may be planning to fit the same motor on their smallest Alto.

As per a report on Autocar Professional, Maruti will be launching a new Alto 800 in December this year. They say it will be more fuel efficient than the current petrol motor which delivers 22 kmpl. The bigger news, however, is that there is also a possibility of the company considering launching it with the 793 cc diesel engine, which, on the Celerio squeezes out 47.6 PS of maximum power at 3,500 rpm and 125 Nm of peak torque at 2,000 Nm. If this goes true, expect it to become the most fuel efficient car in the country at rated fuel efficiency figures of close to 30 kmpl.

The report further adds that a lot of research and development is going on in this move. In the last decade the company has sold 28 lakh units of Altos in the country and the car has continued to slay every opposition that has come on its path be it Korean or Japanese! With a diesel motor, things may be taken to an even higher level…
