So Maruti has started making noise about their small 800cc diesel engine that will propel their upcoming LCV Carry and Celerio diesel. This simply means that we are closer to its official launch. In a word to Economic Times, Kenichi Ayukawa, Maruti Suzuki’s MD & CEO confirmed the development and said that this engine will soon be found on their cars.
He also affirmed that the fuel efficiency of the engine will be ‘closer to 30 kmpl‘ which will make it the most fuel efficient car in the country over their own Ciaz (26.21 kmpl). Celerio was launched with the 1.0 liter K-series petrol engine at the Auto Expo last year and is offered with a manual as well as an AMT gearbox.
According to this report, out of the approximate 5000 units the car is doing every month, the AMT variant accounts for about 40% volumes. Maruti is optimistic about the car and says that its main USP will be the fuel efficiency as well as an attractive price tag. They are eyeing ‘several thousand units’ every month.

This 2 cylinder 800cc diesel engine on the Celerio is Suzuki’s first indigenous diesel engine and is a part of a bigger plan which will spawn more diesel engines upto a capacity of 1.5-1.6 liters that will go on bigger cars.
Maruti has plans to use the same engine on other small passenger cars which may include Alto as well!
