Xclusive: Is This Maruti Suzuki’s Y9T LCV Mule with 800cc Diesel Engine?

We have some real exciting new bits coming from the NCR region. In an exclusive set of spyshots we have received via one of our avid reader, we have a couple of completely covered mules running across somewhere in Faridabad.

We actually spent more than 4 hours in understanding if this is the Y9T test mule from Maruti Suzuki. However, it is so very well camouflaged that it is extremely difficult to conclusively point out that this is one!

Maruti generally doesn’t run their test mules with red number plates and with the HR-26 (Gurgaon) Number plates, there are only two possibilities –

  • This mule is a Maruti Suzuki commercial vehicle
  • This mule is the upcoming 4-wheeler from Polaris-Eicher joint venture

For the time being let us discard the Polaris-Eicher angle to it and if this is the Maruti’s Y9T LCV, this is real interesting news churning up.

This is because, the Y9T will sport Maruti Suzuki’s first 800cc diesel engine which will be later on launched on the company’s smaller cars like Celerio. And if these mules, indeed are the same LCV we are talking about, there is a good possibility of them running on one.

These completely hidden test mules were spotted on Faridabad Bypass Road in Haryana. Our reader, who mistook it to be a Bajaj commercial vehicle at first, says,

It has gears next to the steering wheel like you see in the green or red DTC buses. Buses have automatic but these were manual gears. Another thing, I was at a speed of 80 kmph and this thing was still catching up with me so it has power.

‘Good catching power’ and ’80kmph’ have got us excited about the possibilities, obviously assuming them to be Maruti’s mules with 800cc diesel motors.

Not much is known at this moment about the shape of Y9T commercial, but it is being said that it will carry design inspiration from Suzuki’s Carry. However, these mules are different from the Carry which has been recently showcased at the Bangkok Motor Show. Apart from the 2-cylinder 800cc engine, Maruti Suzuki Y9T is also speculated to get the 1.2L engine in CNG.

Even if this is a Polaris-Eicher mule, we have a new development on this front and a confirmation that the company has started testing them on the roads. These look early prototypes and Polaris-Eicher has plans to launch their ‘4-wheeler’ sometime next year in India as well.

Quite a revelation this, we are hooked!
