RUMOR: Upcoming Duster-Rival, Maruti’s S-Cross May Use Peugeot’s 1.6L Diesel Engine?

Maruti Suzuki displayed the S-Cross & the gorgeous Ciaz at the Delhi Auto Expo in February this year. While the Ciaz will replace SX4, S-Cross, which Suzuki has already been selling the European markets, will soon be launched in India against the Duster and others.

Ever since then, people have been awaiting to know which diesel engine will it sport. More than the wait, it is a hope for the 1.6L Multijet! While a few reports point out to the natural possibility of the 1.6 Multijet motor from Fiat, a rumour generating from Team-BHP.com claims the possibility of Maruti opting for an altogether a new engine for India – a Peugeot sourced motor.

According to the report, Maruti Suzuki seems to be considering Peugeot Citroen’s DV6 1.6 Litre CRDI engine. The engine is available in two power options, a 90HP Fixed Geometry Turbocharger (FGT) and a 110HP Variable Geometry Turbocharger (VGT).

Since Maruti already has a 90HP variant of the 1.3L multijet, a new engine, with higher displacement and the same power figures does not really make sense. So, if this engine is really coming, it might be the 110HP VGT version. Or they also have the option of launching the S-Cross in two tunes, very similar to Duster 85 and Duster 110.

It must be noted that Mini Cooper diesel also uses this 1.6L diesel engine from Peugeot. It is not the first time Maruti may use Peugeot’s engines. They have already sold the Peugeot’s TUD5 diesel engine on the Maruti Zen diesel and Esteem diesel, which failed to make a mark in the market.

Frankly speaking, we are really doubtful of Maruti using Peugeot’s diesel engine on the S-Cross, so we are taking this as a wild rumor for now. In fact, the confirmation of 1.6MJD would have made us a little ‘more’ happier…
