XA Alpha May Continue With 90PS 1.3L DDiS Diesel Engine

Showcased at the Auto Expo of 2012 in Delhi, XA-Alpha is the most awaited compact SUV in India. However, for reasons known only to Maruti Suzuki, the company is taking so much of time in releasing it in the market.

However, what we can tell you is that we are nearing its launch which may happen by the end of next year or early 2016. Not many details have been known at this point and the company has been real secretive about this project.

It is widely known that XA Alpha will be competing against Ford EcoSport and will be a sub 4-meter compact SUV. To adhere to the ‘Small’ car excise duty guidelines, the engines have to be within the limits as well which are 1.2L for petrol engine and 1.5L for diesel engine. While the petrol motor may be the 1.2L K-Series from Swift or if Maruti is able to make their turbocharged 1.0L K10C engine ready by that time.

There have been various rumors about the company working on an indigenous 1.5L diesel engine which will propel many of their cars. However, it will not be ready in time for the XA-Alpha is what we understand. There is also the option of Fiat sourced 1.5L motor which FCA is going to plonk on their all-new compact SUV, codenamed X3U. However, according to the information we have received, Maruti Suzuki may just keep it simple and power the XA-Alpha with the tried and tested 1.3L DDIS in the 90PS VGT (Variable Geometry Turbocharger) tune, which currently powers their Ciaz sedan.
