Maruti Plans SUV Onslaught; But Not Before 2015! List of What’s Coming…

Maruti leads the current car market by a significant margin. However, if there is one clear area where they can further their lead, it is the compact SUV/UV segment where they are absolutely absent.

Now, after looking at the immense potential of this segment with the hugely successful Duster and EcoSport, Maruti Suzuki plans a flurry of products to gatecrash the party. Here is a list of what’s coming from them along with the expected time frame.

• SX4 Crossover CUV (YAD): Launch expected in 2015
• XA-Alpha Based Compact SUV (YBA): Launch in 2016
• Larger SUV based on iV4 Concept: Launch in 2017

SX4 Crossover: Codenamed as ‘YAD’ in Maruti’s internal circles, SX4 crossover has already been launched in Europe and will be Maruti’s first crossover utility vehicle in India. It is being said that it will be launched with both the 1.3L and 1.6L multijet diesel engines sourced from Fiat. Expected Price: 9-10 Lakh

XA-Alpha based Compact SUV: If you were left bamboozled by the XA-Alpha concept showcased at the Auto Expo in 2012, and waited for it with bated breath, this is one bit you will not want to read. ‘YBA’, as it is codenamed, XA-Alpha may not even launch in 2015 as has been earlier reported. iV4 Based SUV: Following the above two, Maruti-Suzuki has plans to launch a full sized SUV based on the muscular iV4 concept sometime in 2017.

This means that, in all probabilities, there is no SUV/CUV that will come out from Maruti’s stables even next year in 2014. Joining extremely late in the party, do you think, Maruti Suzuki will be able to strike and put to test the dominance of EcoSport, Duster and the upcoming Honda’s Urban SUV?
