The luxury compact SUV segment in India is heating up. The competition, with models like the Audi Q3 and the BMW X1 have already gained the early bird advantage. So will it be an Achilles Heel for Mercedes’ new baby GLA to slug it out against the established rivals?
Time shall answer that but for now Mercedes has started testing their entry level crossover in India. The car was recently spied by Zigwheels.com completely covered in typical Mercedes style!
The coupe like looks incorporated into a compact SUV makes the car look better than the current crop. It also makes the GLA seem longer than what it is. Being a test mule, it also has some testing equipment attached to the rear wheel.
Engine options include both petrol as well as a diesel:
- GLA 200 CDi: This new 2.1L 4 cylinder turbo diesel engine churns out 136PS of power between 3400-4000rpm and 300Nm of torque between 1400-3000rpm. It hits the ton in 10 seconds and will go on to 205kmph top speed.
- GLA 200 CGi: The petrol mil is faster than the oil burner, a 1.6L turbocharged 4 cylinder motor! It whips out 156PS of power @3500rpm and 250Nm of torque in the range of 1250-4000rpm. The car will hit the ton in 8.9 secs and be flat out at 205kmph.
Both the engines will be coupled with a dual clutch 7G-DCT automatic transmission. The huge wheels and exhaust embedded in the rear bumper makes the car look sportier. The Mercedes GLA is expected to be launched before the festive season and at starting prices of around 26 Lakhs.
