The new SLK55 AMG is a vario-roof open-top roadster that transforms itself into a closed-top coupé with rigid roof at the touch of a button. In the heat and dust of our country you would probably want to drive it in a closed-top coupé style. Mercedes launched the SLK55 AMG yesterday and it is priced at Rs 1.26 crores ex-showroom New Delhi.
The car up front looks unmistakably an AMG and features classic roadster proportions with exclusive AMG features like the V-shaped AMG front apron and the wide radiator grille. The rear carries the same AMG signature with black diffuser insert with three fins as well as the two chrome twin tailpipes. The exterior looks dynamic and classic with a hint of the SLS AMG.
The interior has the usual Mercedes high-quality materials to create luxury and, above all, sportiness. The AMG sports seats have a good side support to keep the occupants firmly in the seat during more adventurous driving. The centre console is made of brushed aluminium and so are the air vents that look like they came out of jet engines. AMG Performance steering wheel comes with Nappa leather inserts and has aluminium shift paddles for those quick up and down gear shifts. The SLK also features Command On-line six DVD changer and Harmon Kardon surround sound music system.
Of course, it is not all looks and luxury, this girl has a canon under her long bonnet. The powerful yet efficient 5.5 liter V8 engine and the AMG Speedshift Plus 7G-TRONIC transmission is capable of propelling you and your companion from 0-100 kph in just 4.6 seconds. Even though the peak power/torque output is around 421 hp and 540 Nm, the AMG Cylinder Management System stops or starts 4 out of 8 cylinders according to the speed being asked by the driver. This makes sure that just the right amount of fuel is burned which in turn helps efficiency and reduces CO2 emissions. The SLK is capable of doing 250 km/h top speed.
The Euro NCAP Crash Rating has given the SLK AMG five stars. Besides the ABS and the ASR, the car has a drowsiness detection system which predicts the level of driver attentiveness and warns early if it detects signs of driver fatigue.
