Revealed: Tata Nano Diesel will Produce 40bhp of Power

Tata has been testing the diesel version of Tata Nano since a long time now. We were one of the first to bring spyshots of the car way back in May 2012

There were speculations of Tata launching the car sometime early this year in 2013, however, the latest reports suggest that Nano diesel has been delayed and launch might happen towards the end of this year or probably might also spill over to next year. In fact, Tata is aggressively working on quality check of their products and we might not see any huge launches from them this year at all.

Along with the diesel mill, Tata Nano is also being prepared in CNG version which might go on sale sometime soon. But the baton of bringing in huge sales will lie with the Nano diesel. Interestingly, way before its launch, its engine details have emerged at Garretbulletin.com.

Garrett is a leading turbocharger manufacturer of the world and is a part of Honeywell. And from these new details, they will supply Tata turbochargers for Nano. Nano diesel will be powered by a 800cc diesel engine powered by common rail technology. The mill will be a two pot motor which will produce a maximum power output of 30KW @ 4000 rpm which is approximately equal to 40bhps. Just as a reference, current smallest diesel motor of Chevrolet Beat produces 58bhp of power from its one liter engine.

Considering the lighter weight of the car, these figures appear to be adequate on paper, but a lot will also depend on how will Tata design the power curves of the car. There are no torque figures mentioned at the website. Tata Nano diesel will share its engine with the light utility vehicle Ace.

Meanwhile Tata continues testing the Nano diesel in and around Pune with a hope that it will propel the ailing sales of Nano.
