Not that it lacked finesse prior to the recent facelift, but it was about time that the lead ship of the Skoda flotilla – the Superb, received an update. And the subtlety with which the operation was carried out, the new Superb looks even better.
The steering and the dash on the updated Superb illustrate aptly the job undertaken by the Skoda team and it could be described in just two words – calculated discernment. No endeavor here to overcrowd the steering wheel with buttons to make the car look high-tech and neither is there an effort to cram the dash with gizmos. Simple, efficient, or the way Skoda says it – simply clever.
From the outside, the new colour schemes enhance the clear lines, precise panel gaps and the balanced proportions of the car. The ‘magnetic brown’ with which the Superb at the Expo was adorned with made the chrome on the butterfly grille, chin, and around the windows stand out. There is some more chrome gilding on the doors and boot and exhaust pipe ends, but like the rest of the car it won’t strike one as garish. The completely redesigned front end gets LED daytime running lights; as is vogue these days, and the redrawn rear end of the car gets new LED taillights. The wheels of the rejuvenated Superb get new design alloys.
If you are out to stage an insurance swindle, you would want to be in a Superb. The occupants in this car have always been as safe as they would be in a main battle tank. The 2014 Superb has:

- seatbelt pre-tensioners
- active head restraints
- underbody protective cover
- fuel supply cutoff in a crash
- child-proof window and door locks
Suffice to say that the complete inventory of safety and other features in the Superb would make an average-sized thesaurus blush.
The Superb comes in the two established trims and engines – Ambition and Elegance. If you are contemplating a luxury saloon inside of INR 26 lacs, don’t balk; get the Superb. It does plenty and more than what its price tag would suggest.

Skoda Superb gets the 1.8L TSI 160PS petrol engine and 2.0L 140PS TDI diesel engine combos along with the automatic and manual transmission options on both of them.
