SURPRISE: Tata’s EcoSport Rival ‘JUMP’ Compact SUV Concept Coming at Auto Expo 2014

Tata Motors is very late in stepping into the Compact SUV arena, but they have finally reached there. A report by Autocar India  suggests that Tata Motors will world premiere an all-new Concept vehicle called the “JUMP” at the Auto Expo next month.

Details about the Concept vehicle are very sketchy at the moment. We have got hold of the few nuggets of information :

  • JUMP will be based on the X1 platform.
  • The X1 platform is the one that is the foundation for the Vista as well as the new Falcon series.
  • JUMP will slog it out against the EcoSport as the report suggests.
  • Tata Motors hopes to launch the JUMP into the market by 2015.

Stepping into the Compact-SUV arena was an obvious step for the beleaguered Tata Motors. This segment is one of the most thriving ones in the automotive industry. Compact SUVs combine the brawniness of off-roading SUVs with the nimbleness and ease of driving of hatchbacks. The segment was kickstarted by the Renault Duster, followed by the Ford EcoSport. We now have the Nissan Terrano as well.

Though not much about the design of the car is known, but what appears to us is that more than a compact SUV per say, Jump may just be a crossover. It may be based on D90 Xtreme Crossover Concept which Tata has showcased a few months back (featured here).

If Jump is a sub 4-meter car, which it is expected to be, it will sport the 1.2 Litre Revotron turbocharged petrol engine however with an expected increase in power to about 100 horses. There will obviously be a diesel option on the JUMP too; Autocar suggests that Tata Motors is working on an indigenous diesel engine as well.
