The premium SUV segment is a land full of cut throat competition. Just like the small car territory we have a brand which sells way way… more than the rest. The segment comprises of 1500 to 2,000 units per month and we have the Toyota’s Fortuner gobbling up almost all of it, without even a burp!
With the disappointing performance of the Captiva and Forrester before that, Chevrolet is trying to be third time lucky with the Trailblazer. While things do seem muscular, there is a big lapse in variant planning! But it has got quite a few segment-firsts and will it be able to give overpriced and under-specced Fortuner some wee bit of a bother….? We are not sure but let us help you with the on-paper specs, taking the third rival – Pajero Sport in picture as well…
Trailblazer is the most powerful SUV out here and more than that the massive torque of 500 Nm is yumm! Along with that, this ladder frame SUV is also the biggest of the lot in all dimensions! The largest wheelbase in the class should endow it the maximum interior space. Trailblazer also carries 18 inch tyres which are bigger than both Fortuner and Pajero and then we have the 253 mm of ground clearance which can eat up any terrain you throw at it, but hey wait… there is no 4 wheel drive option on offer! Yes, for some reason Chevrolet thinks that India needs no manual transmission as well as a rear-wheel drive SUV will be enough…!
In terms of pricing, Trailblazer, despite so many segment-highs, undercuts Fortuner and is slightly costlier than Pajero.
Trailblazer vs Fortuner vs Pajero Sport: Spec & Price Comparo
Now if we take a look at the sales performance of the Fortuner and the Pajero Sport, one notices a wide gap! If we talk cumulative sales of this financial year so far, the segment has seen a movement of 10,803 units. Out of this Fortuner has registered 8,304 units whereas Pajero Sport could manage 1,018 units and the rest of the others are not even in the frame. On a monthly basis Fortuner and Pajero sport have been doing nearly a 1,000 units and 150 units respectively.
Can the big Chevrolet with all its might do some damage here?
