Is This the Turbocharged 110 bhp/170 Nm Baleno Boosterjet Under Test?

Baleno Boosterjet is the turbocharged petrol model for the enthusiasts…

Now we do not have an explanation why Maruti chose NOT to offer the Baleno with the 90 PS VGT version of the 1.3 liter DDIS diesel motor (may be under works) but they may be testing something more interesting. Team-BHP’s member Naren has shared spyshots of a black Baleno test mule which is speculated to be running around with the 1.0 Liter Boosterjet petrol engine.

Naren informs that the black mule was spotted in Cochin being benchmarked against the Volkswagen Polo GT TSI and carried a 5-speed manual gearbox. The test mule sported export-spec hardware along with an engine sound higher than the current 1.2 liter naturally aspirated petrol motor.

Reasons Why this is a Test Mule

There are enough reasons to believe that this is a test mule and not a regular model, like…

  • It is running around with test (temporary) registration
  • Suzuki’s badge on the grille is hidden
  • Black color is not on offer on the current Baleno.

Baleno Boosterjet : Engine

For all of you unaware, it was/is expected that Maruti Suzuki will launch the Baleno with a new 3-cylinder 1.0 Liter direct injection turbocharged petrol engine (which they call as Boosterjet) and it was also showcased at the car’s unveiling in Geneva. This motor produces 110 bhp of peak power and 170 Nm of maximum torque.

Not much can be derived from this spotting and it doesn’t confirm that the Baleno Boosterjet is being tested for an India launch. This can only be for export markets, however, at some point, we are sure, Maruti Suzuki will offer it here in India…
