Upcoming XA-Alpha ‘YBA’ To Sport Suzuki’s All-New 1.5L Diesel Engine?

In a new scooping bit, Autocar India has revealed that Suzuki is developing a 1.5L (almost) India specific diesel engine to power its future cars.

Trying to get rid of their dependence on Fiat for the 1.3L Multijet engine, it is already known that Suzuki is developing its own set of diesel engines with different capacities. The first one to come out of their stables will be an 800cc two-cylinder diesel engine which will first power a new commercial vehicle, Y9T (codename) pick-up.

From the pick-up this diesel engine will then move on to power upcoming smaller hatchbacks from Suzuki, one of which we know will be the A-Star replacing YL7 hatchback (spyshot below) which is already under tests in India.

Putting two 800cc 2-cylinder mills, Suzuki will derive the all-new 1.5L 4-cylinder diesel engine which will be downsized from the eventual 1.6L capacity. As it becomes obvious then, Suzuki has India in its sight as the 1.5L motor will let them have the lowest excise duty advantage.

And now comes the big revelation! According to Autocar, this is the same engine that will propel the most awaited car from Maruti Suzuki’s stables – compact SUV based on XA-Alpha which has been codenamed as ‘YBA’!

In an earlier report, we have shared with you the list of all crossovers/SUVs coming from Maruti Suzuki and YBA aka XA-Alpha based compact SUV will only be launched sometime in 2015, after the onslaught which begins with SX-4 Crossover, scheduled to be launched in 2015.

The official dimensions along with this 1.5L diesel engine hint at almost the certainty that XA-Alpha based ‘YBA’ will be a sub-4 meter car competing with the immensely successful Ford EcoSport.

However, we wish, Maruti Suzuki speedens up the process and launches the YBA a little earlier than what the current reports suggest.
