Question 1: Which is the best Diesel hatch between 5-7 Lacs

I want to buy a new diesel hatchback in the range of 5-7 lakhs to be used mostly in city traffic and has latest technology and features in its class and also gives a good mileage.

– Harsh

MotorBash:

There are a whole lot of cars that can come with that budget. You should have written more about your preferences. Since you plan to use the car majorly in city traffic, we would not recommend the DDIS Marutis (Swift and Ritz) because of their turbo lags which are an irritant in bumper to bumper traffics.

We would recommend the Ford Figo:

Ford Figo Titanium TDCi is the best option for Harsh

Though it is not very contemporary and doesn’t possess an immensely powerful engine but has pretty respectable performance figures. A good car inside cities. The VFMness of the car is its forte and it is the only diesel hatch (apart from smaller Chevy Beat) in which you can get the top of the line Titanium which comes with ABS and Airbags within your budget of 7 lacs (It is 7.07 Lakh OTR in Pune all inclusive).

It also returns pretty healthy FE figures of around 16-17 kmpl in cities and over 20kmpl on highways.

Read a comprehensive buying cum ownership review of Figo TDCi we have published earlier. There is a facelift slated to come around Diwali which is expected to give the car more features and cosmetic mods.

Question 2: What is the best alternate to Ford EcoSport?

Abhijeet Shedge

Hi, I am waiting for Ecosport… but the news of higher price tag is somewhat discouraging….what would be the price for disel titanium..my budget is 9 lacs. Which other car should i look for

MotorBash:

Hi Abhijeet,

At this instant nothing could be commented about what is going on in Ford’s thinktanks regarding EcoSports pricing. There should be details pouring in in sometime. However, rest assured the top of the line Diesel Titanium would not be priced at or under 9 Lacs for sure.

Renault Duster
Renault Duster 85PS RXE Diesel or wait for Ford EcoSport’s pricing

The closest rival to EcoSport currently is only Duster. You can get 85PS RXE Duster diesel at around 9.3 Lac on road (Pune). If you want a loaded UV, the other option, though not so aspirational, is Premier’s latest Rio which now comes with Fiat’s acclaimed 1.3L MultiJet diesel engine. You can check its prices here.

We would suggest you to wait for EcoSport. Analyze its pricing and features and go for one between Ford or Duster.

Question 3: Query on Buying Second Hand Scorpio

Ravindra H S

Hi, I am planing to buy a second hand scorpio, please provide me details on what are the thing i need to take care during buying. My Budget is 7 lakhs. Currently i own a Santro GLS – ECO Oct 2008 model with 36000 on ODO and want to sell the same can you please tell me what would be the price to quote for selling.

Waiting for your comments

MotorBash:

Hi Ravindra,

Resale depends upon your city and your cars condition. A good condition Santro GLS can go around 2.5 Lac.

mahindra scorpio
We would suggest a brand new Scorpio LX to Ravindra

Moving over to your decision to buy a used Scorpio: Why buy used when you already have a decent budget. Add a couple of lacs more and you can get a brand new sparkling car without having the need to check or bother about anything else. Scorpio range starts from ~9 Lacs OTR for the lesser powerful 2.5L 75PS EX version. We would suggest you to consider the LX which gets the 2.2L 120PS engine and is priced at around 9.5 Lacs on road.

Question 4: Is Jetta the best between Cruze,Laura and Jetta?

Dinesh Kumar

I am planning to buy a new car while upgrading from Ford Fiesta Petrol. My running would be 1500 KM monthly. Half of the same will be within city and rest long trip. Started looking from SUV but did not like the quality of Safari,XUV 500, Duster but do like Forturner, Captiva but they are more expensive than my pocket.

Then i started looking to upgrade to Sedan tested Cruze, Laura & Jetta. Finally i am impressed with Jetta Comfortline. Please suggest if my decision is correct as this car will be driven by both myself and my wife.

MotorBash:

Hi Dinesh,

Apologies for a delayed reply.

Jetta is a fabulous car, in fact, one of the best cars in its segment. If you are thinking of buying a car in this price bracket, Jetta fits in perfectly. It is very well-built, immensely comfortable with very good ride and handling. It has got a lot of space and oozes German quality. There is a lot of equipment on offer as well.

Volkswagen Jetta
Jetta is the car for Dinesh

On the flip sides, it is a little expensive (but classy at the same time!) and carries bland interiors. Our thumbs up for Jetta. Comfortline could be had from 18-19 Lac on road.

There is a new entry in this segment, that of Hyundai Elantra. We have not driven the car yet but do check that out if it clicks for you.
