A lot of us were waiting with bated breaths for the German assault in the compact SUV segment and here it is, right in front of you. Volkswagen has taken the lead and has showcased their Taigun SUV concept in India at the Auto Expo, first time ever.
The great news is that Volkswagen officially confirms that this Taigun on showcase is a near-production version against the concept they unveiled in Sao Paulo Brazil. The Taigun showcased in India carries a new rear with a modified bootlid and rear mounted spare wheel, which is the ‘in’ thing these days.
Considering that they have taken so many pains to modify it to our tastes, this almost comes as a confirmation that they are planning to launch it in India.
Official specs of Indian Taigun informs us that it is 3859mm in length, 1605mm in height with roofrails (1570mm without them) and 1728mm in width and has a wheelbase of 2470mm.
Interestingly, in the official press release of the car, Volkswagen has also used the word ‘affordable’ somewhere which is so India-centric. 😉
According to the company, this Taigun concept is a 4-seat compact SUV and is powered by a new 3-cylinder turbocharged, direct injection 1.0L TSI petrol engine which produces 110PS of power and 175Nm of phenomenal torque. It is fantastically fuel efficient and returns over 21kms for ever liter of fuel. Taigun comes along with 205/50 17 inch tyres and ‘high’ ground clearance (no specs given for ‘high’).
In terms of interiors, Taigun gets a bright ambience with rugged surfaces and 280 liters of boot space which can be expanded to 996 liters when the rear bench is folded down. VW also says that the car is spacious and has 1036mm headroom in the front and 980mm at the rear.
Volkswagen has also mentioned that they do have plans and are ‘evaluating’ launching the car in the Indian market, however the time frame has not been given.
The orange car displayed at the Auto Expo looked sporty and typical Volkswagen. However, this is still a concept and final production version may carry a few changes depending upon the price point at which the company is targeting to launch it here.
