20,752 EcoSports Recalled Due to Corrosion & Airbag Issues

Ford India has announced that the company is going to voluntarily recall 20,752 Ford EcoSport, the company’s largest selling model in India. The recall comes a few days after Ford Australia announced a recall of India made EcoSports in two separate occasions.

The company is recalling these units for two reasons – One, some fault in the seat belt sensor which initiates the side airbags to inflate in case of a collision. Just for the record, this recall is in no way connected with the faulty airbags supplied by Takata Corporation.

Ford wants to reset the wiring harness to make the deployment of side airbags happen at the right moment. The second reason is because of a corrosion issue in the fuel tank and fuel line, once again same as the recall in Australia. Some of the recalled units have been affected by both the issues which does not come as a surprise. The affected units are said to have been manufactured at their Chennai plant between January 2013 and September 2014.

Ford has started a Field Service Action to clear these problems and have already started contacting customers who will have to take their EcoSport to their nearest authorized service station. The cost of the repair will be borne by the company itself and the customers will not have to pay even a single penny.

This is not the first time Ford is recalling the EcoSport. Just a few days after its launch, the company had to recall nearly a 1,000 units to remount the module of the glow plug in diesel variants.
