Our regular readers will remember that Maruti is working on a global premium hatchback codenamed as ‘YRA’ and the car, all camouflaged, has been spied in Europe some time back.
Destined to fight the new Elite i20 or probably slightly higher, the car is rumored to have a global unveil possibly sometime next year. It is also expected that the car will be launched in India almost at the same time as the global launch considering that India is one of Suzuki’s biggest markets.
Now the info coming through one of our sources is that the company has started importing parts of the YRA to India for testing and research purposes (and possibly a few units of the car as well), and work on the development of the new hatch will begin very soon, within a few days, possibly just after Diwali. While speculative details on the petrol engine have been earlier revealed as the 1.0L K10C which will be a turbocharged motor.
Apart from the petrol motor, our sources tells us that YRA will continue with the same 1.3L DDIS diesel engine which does duty on the Swifts and others. This means, Suzuki’s indigenous diesel engines may NOT be plonked on this car at all.
Maruti gets this engine from Fiat and is essentially the famous 1.3L multijet diesel with a few modifications by Maruti. So, a belief that being a premium car, Maruti Suzuki may offer it with a bigger motor doesn’t appear to be going true. There is a possibility that Maruti Suzuki may plonk the more powerful 90PS VGT version on the YRA though.
The good news, however, is that since the work is about to go underway in our country, we can expect the launch from Maruti to be on track. We are still digging for more info and if we have anything new, we will share. Keep tuned!
