Don’t JUMP: Upcoming Tata’s EcoSport Rival to be Called NEXON; Auto Expo Unveiling

Come this Auto Expo 2014 and Tata Motors will no longer be shy of entering the Compact SUV segment! They will have an all-new concept called NEXON for display at the Auto Expo. The NEXON will be a sub-4 meter Compact SUV targeting the likes of Ford EcoSport and possibly Renault Duster.

Autocar India earlier reported that the compact SUV will be called as ‘Jump’ but in a new twist of the tale, the new name, according to them is NEXON. Like the new Bolt and Zest, the Compact SUV will be based on the X1 platform, which will also power some more future Tata cars.

Currently, Tata Motors is completely devoid of any foothold in the Compact SUV segment. That segment is one of the hottest ones in the market right now, and is poised to see more action with the introduction of newer players and their products. Not much is known about the design language of the NEXON, but we unwillingly feel it may be based on the D90 Xtreme Crossover Concept which Tata had showcased at D90’s media launch (pictured here).

The NEXON is expected to sport the 1.2 Litre Revotron turbocharged petrol engine however with an expected increase in power to about 100 horses. There will obviously be a diesel option on the Nexon which, surprisingly, Autocar suggests, will NOT be the Fiat sourced Quadrajet motor and instead, will be an indigenous motor.

After having read this we feel, Tata is desperate to bring back their lost glory. However, we suggest the in-haste Pune based company to stick to the Multijet for some time before announcing an all-open battle which may also backfire for them. The actual truth will be known on the 5th as they reveal their Auto Expo arsenal.
