Now Volkswagen Preparing an EcoSport Rival – Taigun is India Bound!

Its raining compact SUVs, literally! Amidst all what is happening in this compact segment, the latest to join appears to be Volkswagen.

After a shocking revelation of a sub 4-meter Vento, AutoCar India has revealed that Taigun is India bound. If you have been following MotorBash, we have talked about Taigun in detail towards the end of last year. Nonetheless, here we recap all the main details of this compact SUV which will take on EcoSport and Mahindra’s S1010 in India.

What is Volkswagen Taigun?

First, do not confuse yourself with Tiguan! That is a bigger SUV. Volkswagen unveiled a compact SUV named Taigun which is based on their small car Up! at Sao Paulo Motor Show in Brazil in October 2012. Since it is based on the same platform, it shares a lot of stuff with the small Up! including its looks.

We have already spotted Up! in India, not once but thrice(Check Latest Spyshots). The most interesting bit is the fact that Taigun has very compact dimensions and a length of 3859mm which puts it bang in the sub 4 meter category in India – the segment which is on the verge of being explored top left right and bottom!

And if you are floored by Ford EcoSport’s 1.0L EcoBoost petrol engine, concept Taigun was also loaded with a 1.0L 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol motor which was capable of churning out 110PS of power and 175Nm of torque.

Taigun weighs only 985kgs which is even lower than many B-segment hatchbacks. And with these terrific specs, Taigun is claimed to take merely 9.2 seconds for a 0-100 kmph sprint, topping the speedometer at a whooping 186kmph.

So, even before the launch of EcoSport, it has an acute rival that is being prepared by the German giant. Launch details and other bits are still unknown. Keep tuned as we try to dig more.
